While hostels aren’t necessarily common in the South, there are a handful that appeal to travelers on a budget. Smoky Mountain Hostel in Bryson City is one such that is ideal for those looking to explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and its neighboring towns.
The owners also have hostels in Asheville and Wilmington, so it’s easy to hit up all three in a visit to North Carolina. And all three have a funky, laid-back atmosphere that travelers are sure to love.

The cozy house is made up of both dorms and private rooms on two floors. On the entry level is a living room where guests can hang out, two dorm rooms, a full kitchen, and one of two bathrooms.
The kitchen has storage for food and your stay includes daily coffee and snacks like oatmeal and granola bars. The side porch is also a nice place to hang out. Guests enter with a door code, so you don’t have to worry about keys.

On the upper floor is private rooms and the girls dorm as well as a hallway bathroom. All rooms come with linens and towels. Only beer and wine are allowed, not liquor, and there is a quiet period during the night. We were among only a few guests, so this wasn’t a problem during our stay.
The hostel is a short walk from local attractions like the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad and Bryson City’s restaurants, shops, and even two breweries. Cherokee and Nantahala are 20 minutes drive away and the national park is two miles away.
