6 Easy Cosplay Outfits for Universal Orlando

December 27, 2019 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

This post was originally created through my work with Universal Orlando Resort’s Blog Squad.

What can make your trip to Universal Orlando Resort even better? Dressing like your favorite characters! This is appropriate for all ages and is especially fun for groups, whether you’re visiting as a family, bachelorette party, or fan event.

Many of these items can be found in your house already or borrowed, but the rest can be purchased at craft stores, secondhand and thrift stores, and party supply stores.

We’ve also mentioned where you can snap the best photos around the parks in your ensemble. Choose the perfect outfits for Universal Orlando!

Universal Orlando Outfits

Despicable Me’s Minions

What’s more fun than dressing your crew like minions? This is one of the easiest outfits to assemble. I found suspenders and a t-shirt from a thrift store and purchased Despicable Me goggles from a party supply store.

You can also make your own goggles with craft supplies. I made the Gru logo out of paper to tape on the shirt, but you can also paint it on. I even found a plastic banana at a craft store to complete the look!

What You’ll Need

  • Yellow t-shirt
  • Overalls or suspenders
  • Black gloves
  • Goggles
  • Yellow beanie or hat
  • Black boots
  • (Optional) banana

Where to Pose: Be sure to stop for a photo in front of the Despicable Me ride at Universal Studios. You get extra points for posing with one of the minions or Gru. You can also spend the night at a Minion Suite at Loews Portofino Bay.

Jurassic Park’s Scientists

The 1993 film series about dinosaurs coming back from extinction has seen new life with recent reboots, bringing new interest. Traipse around this area of the park dressed as your favorite scientist from the new or old movies.

I found most of these clothing items around my house, including a pair of boots, a bandana, and a button-up shirt. I borrowed shorts and a hat and paired the look with a plastic dinosaur I had!

What You’ll Need

  • Button-up shirt or safari vest
  • Big hat
  • Khaki shorts
  • Boots
  • Bandana
  • (Optional) plastic dinosaur

Where to Pose: The Jurassic Park Discovery Center at Islands of Adventure has endless photo ops, including the atrium just like the one from the movie. The Raptor Encounter is another great spot with a scaly friend ready to take a selfie with you. Continue the dinosaur adventure with a stay in the Jurassic Park Suites at Loews Royal Pacific Resort.

Spongebob Squarepants

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? None other than Bikini Bottom’s most famous resident. The Nickelodeon character is a fun one to dress up as.

I used the same yellow t-shirt from my Minion look and wore with it a white collared shirt that I already had, along with a borrowed pair of tube socks, khaki shorts, and a red tie. If you want to rock his Krusty Krab look, bring a spatula! And a pineapple purse is the perfect accessory.

What You’ll Need

  • Khaki shorts
  • White-collared shirt
  • Yellow shirt
  • Red tie
  • White tube socks
  • (Optional) Spatula, pineapple, or bubbles

Where to Pose: Spongebob StorePants at Universal Studios is not only the best place to snap a photo of you in your outfit. It’s also the only place to see the sponge himself! You never know what other characters you might run into while browsing for souvenirs.

E.T. and Elliot

ET cosplay

One of the park’s most classic rides, and characters, is E.T. from the film ET: Extra-Terrestrial. For this outfit, you need very few items! I found a red hoodie at my local thrift store, just like the one Elliot wears when he hops on his bike with his alien friend.

What You’ll Need

  • Red hoodie
  • (Optional) bike basket with ET doll

Where to Pose: Where else? In front of the E.T. Adventure ride at Universal Studios! There’s also a place where you can pose on a bike with ET in the basket.

Thing 1 and Thing 2

There are so many characters in the Seuss universe that can inspire your park visit look, including the Cat in the Hat with a red bowtie and hat or the Lorax with an orange hoodie and mustache. But I thought that Thing 1 and Thing 2 made for the perfect duo outfit!

I already had this Thing 1 shirt, but it’s easy enough to make with a red t-shirt and some construction paper. I also wore some striped socks and a blue tutu in place of a blue wig. You can also buy wash-out blue hair spray if you’re feeling festive.

What You’ll Need

  • Thing 1 and Thing 2 shirts
  • (Optional) Wacky blue hair

Where to Pose: Look for your “Things” doppelgangers in the Dr. Seuss Character Zone at Islands of Adventure.

Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a popular place to get into the spirit with house robes and colors. But if you want to take it a step further, you can also pick a specific character.

When I visited the park for Celebration of Harry Potter, I adapted Professor Trelawney’s look, complete with glasses, scarves, and layered necklaces. Delicious Reads has a great selection of Harry Potter-inspired costumes including Luna Lovegood, another favorite.

What You’ll Need

  • Glasses
  • Long dress
  • Scarves and shawls or other layers
  • Necklaces
  • (Optional) crystal ball

Where to Pose: Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure or Diagon Alley at Universal Studios, which make up the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, have endless opportunities to photograph.
