Opened in 1935 by Greek immigrants, The Mayflower Cafe is one of Jackson, Mississippi’s longest-running eateries. It’s considered by many to be the original home of “comeback sauce,” a popular condiment in the South.
Popular with politicians and locals alike, the interior is pure diner style. It was this appearance that made it the perfect fit for The Help, which filmed a scene here, as well as Ghosts of Mississippi.
The menu is made up of a combination of Southern and Greek dishes. Their blue plate specials are popular, along with steak and seafood. I dined on the blackened catfish with fried green tomato pieces, with rice and gravy. The redfish and baklava are also favorites.
