Eating on Atlanta’s Buford Highway

July 22, 2019 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Buford Highway
Buford Highway

Gwinnett County near Atlanta is considered to be the city’s Koreatown, but Buford Highway covers every other country’s food. The stretch of road between Doraville, Chamblee, and Norcross has hundreds of restaurants to choose from.

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the options, whether you’re looking for tacos, pho, laksa, and everything in between. So if you’re looking for the best food on Buford Highway, here are a few of the places we recommend.

Buford Highway Restaurants

Lee’s Bakery

Lee’s Bakery

This Vietnamese bakery is a longtime Buford Highway favorite for its affordable and filling meals. There’s a lunch special that includes banh mi sandwiches and pho. The menu also includes spring rolls, salads, and noodle dishes.

4005 Buford Highway NE, Suite C

El Rey Del Taco

Spanish for “The King of Tacos,” the Mexican restaurant stays busy late into the night, including 4:30 am on weekends. The authentic menu includes tacos, tortas, burritos, and quesadillas with a variety of fillings like cow cheek, mushrooms, tongue, goat, and pork. They also have soups, fajitas, and specialty dishes.

5288 Buford Highway NE

Kura Revolving Sushi

The conveyor belt sushi spot in Doraville isn’t just a gimmick. All of the dishes at Kura are made fresh and you can also order what you like to be delivered to your table instead of waiting for it to come back around. They have traditional rolls, nigiri, and sashimi including Kobe beef and yellowfin tuna. It’s not on Buford Highway but is a few blocks away.

6035 Peachtree Road, Unit A107-A110

Matcha Cafe Maiko

Matcha Cafe Maiko

The frozen yogurt shop has authentic Japanese desserts like hot and iced matcha tea, matcha soft serve, shaved ice, maiko, and kokutu. They even have the Golden Shogun, a matcha soft serve topped with gold leaf. The shop’s decor even resembles the minimalism of Japan.

5306 Buford Highway NE, Suite B

Snackboxe Bistro

Also right outside Buford Highway is this Lao street food restaurant. The much-praised eatery has a menu with dishes like chicken laap, a ground chicken salad, Lao sausage, noodle soups, and egg rolls.

113 Peachtree Road, Suite C-114

Nam Phuong

Nam Phuong

The laid-back restaurant has two locations in the area and serves its well-known pho, vermicelli dishes, fried rice, and spring rolls, among many other items. They also have vegetarian crepes for the non-meat eaters.

4051 Buford Highway NE

White Windmill

You’ll find the Korean community hanging out at this bakery all day for its espresso drinks, pastries, sandwiches, and even cakes. Grab a snack from the shelf to go or sit down and stay awhile.

5881 Buford Highway NE

Sushi Yoko

It’s easy to miss this small sushi restaurant next to the highway, but it serves freshly prepared sashimi, nigiri, and rolls. There’s also a small Japanese grocery store inside.

7124 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard

Food Terminal

Food Terminal

The neon-lit Malaysian street food restaurant is owned by the same company as the popular restaurants Top Spice and Sweet Hut. Menu favorites include the Grandma Wonton BBQ Pork, Hainanese Chicken, and Roti Canai. It’s been named some of the best food on Buford Highway.

5000 Buford Highway NE

Pho Dai Loi 2

Another favorite Vietnamese restaurant, this one is also known for its pho and noodle soups with brisket, tripe, flank steak, shrimp, or chicken. They also have vermicelli and rice dishes as well as spring rolls.

4186 Buford Highway NE

Sweet Spot

Sweet Spot

The desserts at this Doraville eatery are the stuff of legend, inspired by those from Hong Kong . The ice cream bowls come surrounded by a bubble waffle and topped in cereal. They also have mochi, milkshakes, and teas.

6035 Peachtree Road, Suite A-115

Markets and Malls

Buford Highway Farmers Market

But it’s not just restaurants that make Buford Highway so unique. It’s also an area of commerce for these international communities. You’ll find specialty food stores, clothing stores, and services like visa assistance and transportation.

Buford Highway Farmers Market

To call this Doraville market a “grocery store” would be to undersell it. Here you can find fresh produce, seafood, and specialty items. There’s also a food court with Indian, Korean, and Cuban dishes.

5600 Buford Highway NE

Plaza Fiesta

This strip mall in Chamblee first opened in 1968 and has gone through a number of versions, but became the Latin American mall in 2000.

It has over 300,000 square feet with a supermarket and flea market with over 200 smaller vendors selling clothing and other wares. The food court has barbacoa tacos, sweet cakes, churros, and fresh juices as well as Ethiopian, Japanese, and even pizza.

4166 Buford Highway NE

Chinatown dumplings

Chinatown Mall

This strip mall in Chamblee has a Chinese bookstore, visa services, and a food hall as well as a Japanese-style garden. Here you’ll find soup dumplings, hand-pulled pork noodles, and Peking duck.

5383 New Peachtree Road, Suite C

Global Mall

In Norcross, this mall serves the South Asian and Indian communities of Atlanta. It has everything from clothing to jewelry to furniture to the offices of the local Indian community’s newspaper. There’s also a food court with Indian dishes.

5675 Jimmy Carter Boulevard

Super H Mart

Like with its Gwinnett counterpart, this Asian grocery store in Doraville has essential ingredients, home appliances, a beauty counter, and prepared foods.

6035 Peachtree Road

Looking for hotels near Buford Highway? Holiday Inn Express Peachtree Corners-Norcross and Hilton Atlanta Northeast are two options in the area.
