This film immediately caught my attention when I first saw the trailer and I wasn’t disappointed. Headstrong Hushpuppy, played by the talented newcomer Quvenzhane Wallis, lives with her father Wink in a coastal area known as The Bathtub.
Hushpuppy is fiercely independent, living in her own house, and has been toughened up by her father. When he falls ill, she sees visions of the ice caps melting and prehistoric beasts roaming the bayou, so she goes to find her mother.
Although this is a work of fiction, it brings up real-life issues like FEMA relief in hurricane-devastated Louisiana. Many locals were hired as actors and film crew, including most of the main characters.
