Southern Stays: The Memphian

May 4, 2022 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

The Memphian

Many of the places to stay in Memphis, Tennessee, are clustered around downtown and Beale Street. One recent exception is The Memphian, a stylish Marriott Tribute Portfolio property in the Overton Square area of Midtown, which opened in 2021. It’s not far from the Levitt Shell, an amphitheater where a young Elvis Presley performed.

Whereas the lobby is all about maximalism, the 106 guest rooms, including nine suites, are more understated. All have chairs and desks, along with coffee makers, luxury toiletries, free WiFi, and a flat screen television.

Amenities at The Memphian

The lobby is a burst of color, with painted photos of the area and other artwork. There’s also a light feature made with fishing lures and a piano. The lobby is also home to a store with local and small-batch goods, as well as the fitness center.

The hotel is convenient to the many nearby bars and restaurants, theaters, and shops. Overton Park is Memphis‘ sprawling green space, home to the Brooks Museum of Art and the Levitt Shell, which hosts free concerts and events.

The Memphian is home to two restaurants: Complicated Pilgrim and Tiger and Peacock. Complicated Pilgrim is a coffee shop and cafe by day, with dinner and a full bar by night. The dining room is filled with colorful baskets and artwork.

Tiger and Peacock is the rooftop bar and restaurant, where reservations are recommended. There’s a weather-dependent outdoor seating area and cozy booths filled with animal-inspired art and decor. The drinks are also based on astrological signs.
