Southern Stays: The Sewanee Inn

October 27, 2021 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

The Sewanee Inn
The Sewanee Inn

Set on the stunning campus of Sewanee: The University of the South in Tennessee, The Sewanee Inn is a stunning stone building that welcomes those visiting students and travelers going to The Caverns.

The Episcopal college was founded in 1857 and sits on 13,000 acres along the Cumberland Plateau. The inn, built in 2014 on the site of a previous inn, takes its inspiration from the Gothic-inspired buildings on campus like McClurg Hall.

Entering the lobby, guests are welcomed with a roaring fire and portraits of Episcopal priests and bishops who founded the school. It looks like something you might see in England. The 43 guest rooms and suites are spread across two floors in king and two queen arrangements. Guests can enjoy views of the golf course and the mountains beyond through the windows and balconies.

In-room amenities include free WiFi, luxury linens, turndown service (complete with lavender cookies!), flat-screen televisions, and in-room coffee makers. There is also additional coffee offered daily in the lobby, along with a digital newspaper service. The bathroom has luxury Gilchrist & Soames toiletries.

Dining at The Sewanee Inn

The Sewanee Inn has a complimentary continental breakfast while the eighteen58 restaurant is undergoing renovations, including fruit, yogurt, and muffins. Elsewhere on the property, Shakerag has menu highlights like burgers, pasta, tacos, and shrimp and grits, along with craft cocktails.

At the golf course, athletes can fuel up after a game at Green’s View Grill. Here you can build your own burger or choose one of their custom creations. There are also salads, sandwiches, and vegan options.

Things to Do at The Sewanee Inn

The inn’s nine-hole golf course was constructed in 1915, and in 2012, it was renovated by golf course architect Gil Hanse, who later worked on the course for the Rio Olympics. Guests can book tee times directly with the course.

There isn’t a pool on the property, but guests can get access to the indoor pool and fitness center at the Fowler Center on campus. The Sewanee Inn also has on-site tennis courts for guest use, along with complimentary bike rentals.

The inn is also close to hiking trails, including those on the Sewanee campus. The Perimeter and Mountain Goat trails are nearby, and so are the trails at South Cumberland State Park.

Tips for Staying at The Sewanee Inn

The Sewanee Inn is located at 1235 University Avenue, Sewanee, Tennessee 37375. Rates start at $199 per night. Book your stay by visiting their website or by calling (931) 598-3568. Parking is included in the rate. It’s also conveniently located near I-24, which connects Chattanooga and Nashville.

My stay was hosted by Geiger PR and Tennessee Tourism.
