Southern Stays: The Tutwiler Hotel

October 3, 2016 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

The Tutweiler Hotel

Birmingham, Alabama was once home to a number of grand hotels and thankfully a handful have been brought back to life in the last few years. One such is The Tutwiler, managed by Hampton Inn & Suites. Originally built in 1914, the hotel was where visiting dignitaries and celebrities stayed.

While the original building closed in 1972 and was demolished, the current building was built as apartments by the same designer in the same period. The “second Tutwiler” opened as a hotel in 1986 and is a National Historic Landmark.

Rooms at The Tutweiler Hotel

A popular venue for weddings, the Tutwiler boasts 149 guest rooms and suites with views of the city. Furnishings are modern but inspired by the originals of the early hotel. Beds feature Hampton’s plush signature bedding, a desk, nightstand, seating area, and flat-screen television. WiFi is also complimentary and available in your room. Bathrooms feature towels and toiletries.

The hotel’s amenities include complimentary hot breakfast, sundries shop, complimentary airport shuttle, fitness center, business center, and ballroom, boardrooms, and meeting rooms. Valet parking is available for $24 per day, but it’s possible to find cheaper parking in nearby lots. The Century is the hotel’s in-house restaurant, serving Southern fare.

The Tutwiler is a short walk from Linn Park, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and the Birmingham Museum of Art. Rent a bike nearby that can get you everywhere else you need to go within the city.
