Southern Stays: Unscripted Durham

Unscripted Durham

Originally the defunct Jack Tar Hotel, Unscripted Durham is the first of a brand from Dream Hotels, a boutique chain with locations in New York City and beyond.

Taking its inspiration from the midcentury style of the building, its historic nature allowed them to retain details like original tiles and the exterior design. It opened in July 2017 in the heart of Durham, North Carolina.

Amenities at Unscripted Durham

The chic hotel has public common areas where locals and guests alike gather, including in their coffee shop. Called allday, it serves Toby’s Estate coffee and breakfast sandwiches in the mornings before transitioning to a cocktail bar in the evening.

The Patio restaurant by the pool serves up light dishes like dumplings, the Impossible burger, and pitchers of beer and cocktails. They are some of the many dining options at Unscripted.

Guests see what makes this place unique starting in the parking garage, where a street artist has created murals on the walls. The theme continues into the lobby, with framed works by notable artists. Every afternoon, wine is offered to guests.

Upstairs, the pool area serves as the main entertaining space, as it’s the only rooftop pool in town. Visitors can come take a dip for $15, and the pool is a popular spot for weekend yoga and drag queen brunches. You can reserve chairs and daybeds for your pool time.

Rooms at Unscripted Durham

The 74 guest rooms are spread across three floors and are decorated with items by Jonathan Adler as well as an iPod dock, television, free WiFi, robes, toiletries, and a mini fridge. The rooms have comfortable beds and entertaining areas. In addition to business travelers and tourists, Unscripted is a popular staycation spot for residents of The Triangle.

Tips for Staying at Unscripted Durham

Unscripted Durham is located at 202 North Corcoran Street, Durham, North Carolina 27701. Rates start at $129 per night, and parking is $20 per day. Book your stay by visiting their website or calling (984) 329-9500.

My stay was partially hosted by Unscripted Durham, but all opinions are my own.
