Started in the 1990s, Serenbe is a New Urbanist community in the farmlands of Chattahoochee Hills, located south of Atlanta, Georgia. Its name comes from “serenity” and “to be,” created by Steve Nygren and Marie Lupo Nygren after a 1991 visit. It’s become a popular place for people to move to get away from the traffic of the city or for visitors to spend a relaxing afternoon.
The History of Serenbe
Now home to 650 residents, Serenbe is broken up into “hamlets,” each with its own name and theme. The first home was constructed in 2004. Architectural styles also vary, including Craftsman-style homes, brick townhomes, and apartments above retail space.
It was designed to be walkable, with paths amongst the trees. And despite the development, there is always an element of nature around every corner.
What to See at Serenbe
There’s not a traditional list of “things to do” at Serenbe, like museums and attractions. But that doesn’t mean you won’t find something to keep you busy. The seasonal Saturday Farmer’s Market has local vendors, including Serenbe’s 25-acre organic farm.
Explore the interconnected trails on foot, on a rental bike, or join a horseback riding trip. The gym has spinning classes, and there are also yoga classes (including goat yoga!) and pilates. The spa offers all sorts of treatments, including Reiki and massages.
There are also frequent events like outdoor dance and theater performances, film screenings, festivals, and concerts. The farm is open to tours, and the affiliated arts organization has artist talks. Browse the art galleries and shops like the General Store, which has wine and other essentials, as well as Hills and Hamlets, one of the state’s best bookstores.
You might even get a chance for celeb spotting. A number of actors have stayed or lived here over the years due to the proximity to film studios, including the stars of The Walking Dead and Marvel films.
Where to Eat at Serenbe
Serenbe has incredible restaurants for such a small area. For juices and health-focused food, Bamboo Juices has fresh-pressed juices. Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop serves coffee, sandwiches, and salads. Halsa has Scandinavian-inspired bowls, toasts, and smoothies.
For dinner, The Hill has Italian fare like risotto and pizza, along with steaks and fried chicken. The Farmhouse at Serenbe is at the inn and has gained notoriety for its fried chicken and farm-fresh vegetables.
Where to Stay at Serenbe
Most visitors stay at The Inn at Serenbe, a cozy farmhouse with 33 rooms and cottages between multiple buildings. The property also has a pool and hot tub, a croquet lawn, and rocking chairs. It’s also popular for weddings. The inn also has rentals in town, including lofts and multi-bedroom homes with full kitchens and living areas.
