Visiting the Delta Flight Museum

February 15, 2016 By Caroline Eubanks 1 Comment

Delta Flight Museum

Atlanta, Georgia is known as the region’s transportation hub, home to the world’s busiest airport. Delta Airlines is the main reason, as the company has called the city their headquarters since 1941. Since 1995, the Delta Flight Museum has served as a way to track the company’s history, partnerships, and general aviation history.

Set in historic Hangar 1, the building originally used to maintain the airline’s fleet, the newly rebuilt museum is a great way to spend the day learning more about the industry. It’s also close to the Atlanta Airport and an easy layover option.

What to See at the Delta Flight Museum

The 68,000 square feet starts in the first gallery, which details the airline’s rise from a small, regional crop-dusting airline to the world’s largest. The company that became Delta was formed in Macon before moving to Monroe, Louisiana. You’ll find interactive displays and a replica of the Huff Daland Duster as well as uniforms and artifacts from the time.

The larger gallery has a Douglas DC-3, and The Spirit of Delta, the airline’s first Boeing 767, which was purchased by employees in 1982. Inside, you’ll find original seats, including your chance to sit in first class, and flight attendant uniforms from over the years.

It includes not only Delta uniforms but also the airlines that it acquired, like Northwest, Pan Am, and Western. They also have panels on Delta partnerships from the company’s tenure, namely with the Olympic games.

This museum is one of only a handful of its kind in the world and an especially unique attraction for aviation geeks. Both children and adults can find something worthwhile at the Delta Flight Museum. There’s even a flight simulator, which costs extra.

Tips for Visiting the Delta Flight Museum

Public tours are available with admission every Tuesday at 1 pm. The museum is open daily except for Wednesday from 10 am to 4:30 pm during the week and 12 to 4:30 pm on Sunday. Admission is $12.50 for visitors but military and Delta employees receive a discount.

In neighboring College Park, the Hotel Indigo Atlanta Airport – College Park, an IHG Hotel has stylish rooms, a free airport shuttle, a fitness center, and an onsite restaurant.
