Visiting the Wolfsonian Museum

February 10, 2014 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Miami has a thriving arts scene and the Wolfsonian Art Museum, which is a part of the Florida International University campus. The Art Nouveau building houses pieces that are entirely different from what you might find at other art museums. The emphasis is on design pieces and education rather than “famous” names.

The museum was created to explore how art communicates and has the power to persuade. The Wolfsonian-Florida International University has a collection of propaganda posters from the Industrial Revolution, former Tube signs from London , modern furniture, and contemporary pieces.

The museum opened to the public in 1995 and has become a research facility for local art students. It is just one of many great museums in Miami worth checking out.

Tips for Visiting the Wolfsonian Museum

The Wolfsonian Museum is located at 1001 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida 33139. The museum is open from 12-6 pm daily, Fridays 12-9 pm, and closed on Wednesdays.

The museum is located in Miami Beach and easily accessible from other parts of the beach by walking or by renting a DecoBike. From downtown Miami, take bus 103 or 120 to Washington Avenue and 9th Street. By car, take A1A north onto the MacArthur Causeway to Miami Beach. Paid parking is available in the decks at 1301 and 1041 Collins Avenue, as well as 512 12th Street.

Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, and children, and free for Wolfsonian members, children under 6, and students, faculty, and staff of the State University System of Florida. Admission is free every Friday from 6-9 pm.

The Miami Cultural Pass is a combination ticket that grants entry into the Wolfsonian, Bass Museum, Jewish Museum of Florida, and the World Erotic Art Museum, as well as discounts at local restaurants.
