Classic Eats: Scott’s BBQ

January 27, 2016 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Unless you know where it is, you probably won’t just happen upon Scott’s BBQ in Hemingway, South Carolina. The barbecue restaurant has operated for over 30 years on a quiet road between Myrtle Beach and Florence .

It’s well off I-95, yet foodies from Charleston and restaurant critics from as far as New York have made the trek to see what’s so special about the pulled pork here. You may have even heard of it through television shows like Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown.

The interior is simple as it’s mostly a to-go establishment. There are a few tables and racks selling items like bags of chips, fruit and soda. The walls are covered with photos of the celebrities that have dined here and the countless magazine and newspaper clippings that mention Scott’s.

Founded in 1972, the restaurant is now run by Rodney Scott, one of the top pitmasters in the state. A 2013 fire left the restaurant in shambles, but the community and the Southern Foodways Alliance rallied to rebuild.

Obviously, the item to order is the pulled pork, which is slow-cooked in pits overnight. The rest of the menu is limited but includes chicken and ribeye steak. Plates and sandwiches are on offer but be prepared as the sauce has a kick. I chose the pulled pork sandwich, which gave me a styrofoam container of pulled pork with two slices of white bread. I ate it in my car as I drove towards Myrtle Beach.

Tips for Visiting Scott’s BBQ

Scotts BBQ is located at 2734 Hemingway Hwy, Hwy. 261 Brunson Cross Road, Hemingway, South Carolina 29554. They’re only open Wednesday to Saturday from 9:30 am until they run out. Go early and bring cash to make sure you get to eat!
