Based on the book by the same name, October Sky tells of Homer Hickam and his friends who dream of space in a small coal-mining town. Against his stern father’s wishes, Homer learns about rockets. Their dreams and an inspiring teacher eventually get them out of West Virginia and on to the national science fair. The movie stars a young Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, and Laura Dern.
Specific scenes were filmed at Fountain City Elementary School, Gresham Middle School, the Jacobs Building, TVA buildings and the Tennessee Valley Railroad.
