Edisto Island is a barrier island off the coast of Charleston. It is less developed than other beach towns, particularly Isle of Palms and Kiawah Island. The name of the island comes from a Native American tribe that settled here.
Today the population is around 2,000 and it swells during the summer months with vacation renters. There is one resort, one grocery store, and a handful of restaurants apart from the privately owned homes on the island.
One of the oddest attractions on the island is the Mystery Tree, pictured, which is a pole out in the swamp where people leave items. No one knows who started the tradition, but it’s common to see people pulling over on the side of the road to check it out.
