This small town of less than 5,000 residents is only 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta but feels like an entirely different place. It’s known as the official home of Gone with the Wind, serving as Margaret Mitchell’s real-life inspiration for Tara.
The last battle of the Atlanta Campaign in the Civil War was fought here, largely in the front yards of homes and plantations. Films Smokey and the Bandit and We Are Marshall were filmed in town and Jonesboro served as the backdrop for a Lynyrd Skynyrd album cover.
