Located in rural Wilkes County, there are few places as beautiful and quintessentially antebellum as Washington, Georgia. First settled in the 1700s, the town of less than 5,000 has many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Robert Toombs House, the Wilkes County Courthouse, and the Mary Willis Library.
The town was the site of two different wars, starting with the Battle Creek in the Revolutionary War. Later, during the Civil War, the town was spared from battles, but Jefferson Davis held his last Confederate cabinet meeting here before his surrender.
