Southern Stays: Carolina Inn

August 3, 2022 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Carolina Inn
Carolina Inn

The Carolina Inn is nearly a part of the campus of the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, right across the street from the gates. Opened in 1924, the historic hotel is like the town’s living room, hosting generations of students, parents, faculty, and visitors.

Built in the Southern Colonial style, the inspiration for the design was Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. In 1935, the property was donated to the university with profits going to support the school’s library.

The communal spaces of The Carolina Inn are full of antiques and items related to UNC history. For example, one panel discusses how the origins of the long-running play The Lost Colony tie into the college. The inn also has a fitness center and a complimentary shuttle that runs within a two-mile radius.
