Disney's Contemporary Resort
Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary Resort opened in 1971 as one of the original Disney hotels, alongside the Polynesian Resort and Fort Wilderness. It’s set on the lagoon next to the Magic Kingdom.

The AAA Four-Diamond Award hotel was designed by midcentury modern architect Donald Wexler, whose work is found in Palm Springs. It was even the site of a 1973 press conference with President Richard Nixon.

Rooms at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

The hotel has over 300 rooms set around an interior hallway and the Monorail runs inside of the lobby. There’s also the iconic 90-foot-tall mural by Mary Blair overlooking the gift shops.

Guest rooms in the main building have balconies that overlook the parks or the rest of the property. They have large bathrooms, coffee makers, and closets. The couches can also be pulled out into an additional bed.

Bay Lake Tower has over 200 units belonging to Disney Vacation Club with its own check-in and concierge desks. The tower is connected by a sky bridge to the rest of the hotel. There’s also a restaurant only for club members.

The Contemporary also has a convention center, two pools, sports courts, and an arcade. Boats are available for rent on Seven Seas Lagoon, along with fishing. There are also nightly outdoor movies.

Dining at the Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary Resort is home to California Grill, one of the most awarded restaurants within Walt Disney World. Reservations are hard to come by but you can also enjoy some of the dishes in the lounge.

Outer Rim and the Wave Lounge are among the places to grab a drink, along with the poolside Sand Bar and Cove Bar. Chef Mickey’s is the hotel’s character dining.

The Wave of American Flavors serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Contempo Cafe and Contemporary Grounds are the perfect places for a quick pastry and coffee on your way to the parks.

Adult pool

There are many ways to get around from the Contemporary Resort. The Magic Kingdom is accessible via a walkway as well as the Resort Monorail. There’s also a monorail to Epcot and the Ticket and Transportation Center.

Buses run to the other parks, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, as well as to Disney Springs. Signs indicate which ones are which. There’s also a ferry to Fort Wilderness.
