Southern Stays: The Candler Hotel

November 27, 2020 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

The Candler Hotel

A great addition to the hotels of downtown Atlanta is The Candler Hotel. The 17-story high-rise was the tallest in the city when it was built in 1906. It was constructed by Asa Griggs Candler, the founder of Coca-Cola.

The building itself was originally created as an office complex, home to the headquarters of Central Bank and Trust. Johnnie Cochran had an office here, along with Coca-Cola’s offices.

Transformation of The Candler Building

It remained an office until 2016, when plans were made to transform it, but it took until the next year for plans to begin. In 2019, it opened as The Candler Hotel, a part of Hilton’s Curio Collection. The directory in the elevator lobby still features the names of the businesses that inhabited the upper levels.

The stunning Beaux-Arts marble sculptures have been preserved alongside Tiffany windows and chandeliers while adding modern decor to the lounge spaces.

Staying at The Candler Hotel

The over 200 chic guest rooms have a king or two queen beds. They come equipped with the essentials like a mini-fridge, espresso machine, a table, flat-screen television, and USB outlets. The bathroom has a hairdryer and luxury toiletries.

The hotel has amenities like free WiFi, a fitness center, and a business center. By George is the hotel’s restaurant, helmed by celebrity chef Hugh Acheson in the former bank space. It has a French-inspired menu and dishes like bucatini and poached salmon, and is named for architect George E. Murphy.
