The Grand Hotel first opened its doors in 1847 in Point Clear, Alabama, a short drive from the town of Fairhope. It was originally a two-story building with 40 rooms. Guests used to take steamboats across Mobile Bay to reach the hotel.
The Army used the hotel as a training base during World War II. The hotel honors the military history with cannon firing, which takes place daily at 3:45 pm. Guests are welcomed into the tall brick fireplace in the lobby. There’s also a small alcove with artifacts from the early days of the hotel like brochures and room keys.
Over the years, the hotel expanded and was remodeled, especially after fires and hurricane damage. It now sits on 550 acres. It is a member of the Historic Hotels of America and Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Known as the “The Queen of Southern Resorts,” the hotel has hosted such acclaimed guests as Margaret Thatcher, Dolly Parton, Colin Powell, and Patti Labelle.
