Visiting Six Flags Over Georgia in Atlanta

Six Flags Entrance

Six Flags Over Georgia is one of the area’s best theme parks, located outside Atlanta in Austell. It was the company’s second location, which opened in 1967.

The park is open from March to October with special events in the fall and winter. It’s 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta, accessible by car via I-20 or CobbLinc Bus 30, which drops off in front of the park.

Six Flags Over Georgia now spans nearly 300 acres, including Hurricane Bay water park. They also have a sister water park, White Water, around 30 minutes away in Marietta.

Through a partnership with Warner Brothers, many rides feature characters from the classic cartoons. There is also an area dedicated to Batman and DC Comics characters.

One-day ticket prices are $70 at the park but cheaper if you purchase online in advance. There are also add ons to jump the line. If you visit more than once, a season pass is a better deal since it includes parking, usually $25-40 extra.

Themed Areas at Six Flags

Gotham City
Gotham City

Six Flags Over Georgia is broken up into twelve themed “lands.”

Bugs Bunny Boomtown

This is the best area for little kids with rides like Acme Trucking Company, Daffy Duck Bucket Blasters, Speedy Gonzales Speed Boats, Tweety’s Tweenhouse, Yosemite Sam Wacky Wagon, and Bugs Bunny High Sea Adventure. There’s also the Looney Tunes Adventure Camp playground.

Carousel Hill

Another small child-friendly area centers around the historic Riverview Carousel, built in 1908 for the World’s Fair. The hand-carved ride has moving animals and stationary benches.

Ride smaller rides like Up, Up & Away and Rockin’ Tug or pile the whole family into the Hanson Cars, old school vehicles, for a loop around the track.

Coastal

Twisted Cyclone is the only ride in this small themed area at the front of the park. The steel hybrid coaster is on the site of a former wooden coaster.

You can also grab a bite at Johnny Rocket’s, the chain restaurant known for diner food like burgers and milkshakes.

DC Super Friends

This kids area is similar to Gotham City and has exciting rides like the Joker Funhouse Coaster, Wonder Woman Flight School, and Superman Tower of Power.

Georgia

The appropriately-themed Georgia area is where guests enter the park, home to shops and restaurants like the Magic Kingdom‘s Main Street USA.

Here you can ride the Georgia Scorcher, a stand-up roller coaster. Cool off on the Log Jamboree, a log flume ride that has been in the park for many years.

Gotham City

Some of the best rides are in the area inspired by the DC superhero. Start at Batman: The Ride and The Riddler Mindbender, two of the most popular coasters.

There are also carnival-style rides like Catwoman Whip, Poison Ivy: Toxic Spin, The Joker: Chaos Coaster, Harley Quinn: Wild Whirl, DC Super Villains Swing, The Batcopters, and The Joker Funhouse Coaster.

Birds of Prey Cafe has cheesesteaks, chicken tenders, and beer while Gotham City Snacks has Dippin Dots and other bites.

Lickskillet

Inspired by a gold rush town, Lickskillet is home to iconic rides like Blue Hawk, the Great American Scream Machine, SkyScreamer, and Thunder River. For a small fee, you can also drive the Gold Town Racers.

In this area, enjoy the smoked turkey legs at Hickory Chip, cold treats at Lickskillet Ice Cream, and burgers and barbecue at Miner’s Cookhouse.

Metropolis Park

The best ride around is Superman: Ultimate Flight, which makes riders feel like they’re the caped crusader. Justice League: Battle for Metropolis is another fun interactive indoor ride.

In this area, grab a quick bite at Munchopolis, which has Dippin Dots, popcorn, pretzels, and more.

Peachtree Square

Families can hop aboard the Six Flags Railroad, which runs through the park. The Dahlonega Mine Train is a classic family-friendly introduction coaster. Acrophobia is not for the faint of heart, pulling riders to the highest reaches of the park.

Sit down for a full meal at JB’s Sports Bar and Grille, which has specialty burgers, vegan options, and wings, along with a full bar. Strutters Famous Chicken Wings & Brews is another great place for adults to share a meal.

Piedmont

The only ride in this area is Monster Mansion, but it’s one that can’t be missed. The bizarre boat ride through the swamp introduces riders to the monsters that live there.

Grab burritos and nachos at Macho Nacho or a slice at Primo’s Pizzeria. Monstore has snacks like pretzels and popcorn.

ScreamPunk District

In the newly reimagined area next to Lickskillet you’ll find Thunder River, an exciting raft ride, and Pandemonium, a ride that spins and soars.

USA

Since the park opens by zone, be sure to line up at these rides first. They tend to have the longest wait times. Here you can experience the thrills of Dare Devil Dive and Goliath, a hypercoaster.

When you get hungry, Dee Jay’s Diner takes its inspiration from the 1950s with burgers, hot dogs, and fries.

Roller Coasters and Thrill Rides at Six Flags

Goliath Roller Coaster
Goliath Roller Coaster

What Six Flags Over Georgia has over many parks is the abundance of roller coasters and thrill rides. Goliath and Mind Bender are often cited as the best rides in the park by coaster enthusiasts.

Batman: The Ride is one of the inverted steel coasters, featuring music from the 1990s films. The Ninja was refurbished as Blue Hawk and features the biggest twists and loops of any ride in the park.

The Dare Devil Dive opened to much excitement for its virtual reality capability and 95-foot vertical rise. The Great American Scream Machine is a longtime favorite, originally the world’s fastest and tallest coaster.

The Georgia Scorcher is unique in that it has riders standing up while Superman puts visitors on their stomachs, flying above the park. Twisted Cyclone is a steel hybrid coaster.

Kid-Friendly Six Flags

Six Flags Railroad

If you’re not tall enough to ride the big coasters, at least 42 inches, there’s plenty for younger visitors! Bugs Bunny Boomtown is the best place to be for little kids as there are rides parents can ride with them.

Carousel Hill and DC Super Friends also have smaller rides. Don’t miss the Six Flags Railroad, which all ages are sure to enjoy.

Older kids can ride the Dahlonega Mine Train, a roller coaster that doesn’t go upside down. The Joker Funhouse Coaster is another coaster for kids.

Food and Drink at Six Flags and Nearby

Beaver Creek
Taco Prado

Every area within Six Flags has some sort of food stand running from snacks like Dippin Dots and Icees to full sit-down meals like burgers.

The Lickskillet area has the most dining options to choose from, along with a covered outdoor seating area. DeeJay’s Diner and Johnny Rocket’s are popular choices. There’s also a Dining Pass.

You can’t bring in coolers, but if you’d rather save money, pack a picnic in your car and get stamped for re-entry. There are also restaurants nearby like our favorites Taco Prado, Beaver Creek Biscuits and Barbecue, and Tiffany’s Kitchen.

Seasonal Events at Six Flags

Holiday in the Park
Holiday in the Park

While there are stages with performances year-round, it’s the seasonal events when you’ll see the most singing and dancing.

Fright Fest is the most well-known when the park becomes equipped with haunted houses and spooky characters.

Holiday in the Park features carolers, roasting marshmallows, hot chocolate, and plenty of lights.

If you’re looking to stay close to the theme park, Hampton Inn & Suites Lithia Springs and Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Austell have plenty of space to unwind. You can also glamp at Sweetwater Creek State Park.

Six Flags offers stroller and wheelchair rentals, along with pet boarding, for an added fee. Locker rentals are also found throughout the park.

Some rides, like Superman, require you to put your belongings in a locker, so the smaller bag you have, the better. A fanny pack is best. Inside, bring hand sanitizer, sunscreen, a water bottle, and snacks.
