The BB King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center, located in the late legend’s hometown of Indianola, Mississippi, is an essential stop for people who want to learn the rich history of blues music.

It’s located in an old train depot, complete with interactive exhibits devoted to the life of the musician as well as the time in which he lived and the Mississippi Delta. The $14 million dollar museum opened in 2008 in the small town.

What to See at the BB King Museum

The museum starts with his early life on a sharecropping farm. He started performing with a group of gospel singers, which started his musical journey. He later went to Memphis, where he started writing jingles for the radio and playing at clubs.

He also recorded his first record in 1952 and later appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, following in the footsteps of countless other musicians. King’s rise to fame aligned with many points in history, like the Civil Rights Movement. His music crossed genres, winning countless Grammys, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Kennedy Center Honors. His guitar, named Lucille, is an icon in its own right.

Record your own blues song with a guitar simulator and see items from BB King’s private collection, including his Grammys, many of his “Lucille” guitars, memorable outfits he wore at performances, posters from concerts, and photographs of him with some of his most famous friends.
