Southern Stays: Windy Hill Farm & Preserve

Windy Hill Farm and Preserve is a former private farm that opened as a resort in 2022. It’s located in Loudon, Tennessee, a rural area between Knoxville and the Great Smoky Mountains, surrounded by the Tennessee River and its lakes.

The 650-acre retreat gained popularity with quail hunters, who flock to the tall grasses every season, but there’s plenty to do during a stay at Windy Hill, which has two miles of access to the river. It’s also a 40-minute drive for those looking to attend a University of Tennessee football game.

The Rooms at Windy Hill Farm

Guests staying at Windy Hill have three lodging options to choose from, including the Water Tower Cabins, The Lodge, and The Farmhouse. ADA-accessible options are in the former two.

I stayed at one of the Water Tower cabins, which included a large bedroom, bathroom, and closet with a record player, coffee maker, mini fridge, and a porch. They’re all set around a communal fire pit and are accessed by a golf cart unless you have a small car like me. Some are also dog-friendly.

The Lodge is right across from the main building, which is where check-in and the restaurant are, with king and queen beds. They also have the best sunset views and have the option of adjoining rooms. Parking is right out front.

The Farmhouse is a short golf cart ride away and overlooks the river. Best for groups, it has six bedrooms and a full kitchen, where you can bring in the chef for private meals. There are also indoor and outdoor fireplaces.

Dining at Windy Hill Farm

When it comes to meals at Windy Hill, they’re all-inclusive, including snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Wilder Restaurant is the on-site dining outlet and is popular with both guests and locals, who can join for dinner.

Breakfast includes dishes like avocado toast, omelets, and a chicken biscuit. For lunch, popular options are the smash burger and venison chili. The menu shines for dinner, where you can enjoy craft cocktails with duck confit, buttermilk quail, and elk chop, all using seasonal, local ingredients when possible. There’s also live music on the patio on weekends.

Tips for Staying at Windy Hill Farm

Many activities are also included in your stay, including yard games, hiking, mountain biking, and the nightly bonfires. For a fee, you can also take part in hunting, archery, beekeeping, in-room massage, kayaking, bourbon tasting, fishing, a cooking class, and a wine hike.

Windy Hill Farm & Preserve is located on Breck Ellison Road, Loudon, Tennessee 37774. Rates start at $499 per night. Book your stay by calling (865) 657-1700 or by visiting the website.
