Small Town Saturday

Small Town Saturday: Roswell, GA

January 4, 2014 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Roswell, Georgia is another northern suburb of Atlanta. It has a population of less than 90,000, but its historic district feels much like a small town. It hosts weekly events like Alive After Five and art walks. The downtown area has shops and restaurants within walking distance of one another. A mill was set up in the 1800s, which is what led to settlement in the area. … [Read more...] about Small Town Saturday: Roswell, GA

Kennesaw, Georgia is a suburb of Atlanta with less than 30,000 residents. The area was once mostly rural and was the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during the Civil War. Small Town Saturday: Sheldon, SC

December 7, 2013 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Sheldon is a small unincorporated community of 5,000 people outside of Beaufort, South Carolina. The area is still very rural and made up of farms and former plantations. Nearby are the Old Sheldon Church Ruins. Another odd attraction is the African village of Oyotunji, a part of the New World Yoruba initiative created in 1970. A dozen or so families live in the village, which … [Read more...] about Small Town Saturday: Sheldon, SC

Small Town Saturday: Bowman, SC

Located between Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina is the small town of Bowman. The town of less than 1,000 residents was once a thriving rice-producing community. Today it has a few shops, but is known for the UFO Welcome Center, a manmade tourist attraction in a resident's backyard. Jody Pendarvis built the "alien rest stop" in 1994 and began charging admission for … [Read more...] about Small Town Saturday: Bowman, SC

Small Town Saturday: Edisto Island, SC

November 23, 2013 By Caroline Eubanks Leave a Comment

Edisto Island is a barrier island off the coast of Charleston. It is less developed than other beach towns, particularly Isle of Palms and Kiawah Island. The name of the island comes from a Native American tribe that settled here. Today the population is around 2,000 and it swells during the summer months with vacation renters. There is one resort, one grocery store, and a … [Read more...] about Small Town Saturday: Edisto Island, SC
